BigSky reviews!

Posted by Ethan

BigSky ReverberatorThe reviews for BigSky are now appearing through the clouds of the interwebs, and we’re incredibly excited to hear what people have to say.

Featuring 12 unique reverb machines – from rooms, halls, and plate reverbs to “cloud”, “bloom” and “magneto” and more – “Big Sky is something of a triumph, producing hyper-realistic rooms, ambient space trips and everything in between with ease and finesse,” writes Sound on Sound magazine.

Our friends at Premier Guitar think that BigSky is a “virtual mad-scientist lab for those who are endlessly fascinated with the possibilities of audio signals bouncing off unseen objects—and then being twisted, warped, chopped, and vaporized.” It’s so great to hear that what they call “otherworldly and authentic vintage tones” within BigSky provoked such a colorful and evocative reaction.

Gabriel from Best Guitar Effects attended our recent Strymon Social event, and used that opportunity to spend some time talking with our co-founders Gregg, Dave, and Pete. To learn about his “intel-gathering reconnaissance mission” at the Strymon labs, click on over to his incredibly in-depth BigSky review. We’re pleased to learn that he ranks BigSky as “simply one of the best reverb processors available today.” And we’re glad to hear his praise for the wealth of “studio-grade power” in it’s performance-friendly form-factor.

Guitarist magazine also has some very nice things to say about BigSky. They noted that the reverberations within BigSky “make your jaw drop and your playing soar” and that it makes them “want to write poetry to the soundtrack of its glorious ambience.” We’re so glad to hear that BigSky got their creative juices flowing!

We’re incredibly honored that BigSky has received the SonicState Best Effect Pedal of 2013 award, with their team noting “everything about it is stunning.” When it comes to creative inspiration, they cited the real-time tweakability of BigSky as being “on a different level to any reverb we’ve tried before.” And they totally made us blush when they said our “products sound great, they look great, they’re perfectly engineered, and they essentially fit a whole studio rack’s worth of effects and patches into a tiny little box for using on the road.” Thanks guys, we’re so glad you’re enjoying what we’re up to here in the labs! :)

Flint Tremolo & Reverb receives the Guitar Player Editors’ Pick award!

Flint Tremolo and Reverb effects pedal

Sweet! We’re excited to announce that our Flint Tremolo & Reverb pedal has received the Guitar Player Editors’ Pick award.

“Featuring a powerful SHARC processor and a wonderfully voiced analog front-end, the Flint captures the magic of three different classic Fender-style tremolos as well as three different reverbs. From the phasey throb of the ’61 Harmonic Trem to the ’80s Reverb setting, the Flint is unbelievably musical and infinitely usable. It captures the surfy spring of Fender reverb combos from the ’60s and its take on early digital reverbs yields beautiful ambient options with every guitar and amp setup. Its small size, stereo outs, expression pedal input, and jaw-dropping digital renderings of hard-to-capture analog classics make it one of the most impressive boxes I’ve heard in a long time.” – Guitar Player, February 2013

We’re very honored that Guitar Player has deemed Flint worthy of their coveted award! New to Flint Tremolo & Reverb? Check out a few of our demo vids below.

Mobius receives the Premier Gear award!

Posted by Ethan

Mobius - Premier Gear awardWe just read Premier Guitar magazine’s review of our new Mobius modulation— and we we’re extremely excited to announce that Mobius has received their coveted Premier Gear award!

Here’s what they had to say:

“The Mobius is a pedal of very deep capabilities that exponentially widens the sound potential of a pedalboard, opens up studio and production possibilities, and can inspire whole tunes.”

“The sonic undulations are deep and complex, and at times sound impossibly real—to the point of being confounding. Just how is a 4′ tall Leslie with wildly spinning drum and horn speakers hiding behind that practice amp?”

“The quality of the Mobius is superb. It’s dead silent—quiet enough to use for outboard mix buss duties. And it’s difficult to imagine a modulation unit doing much more as capably as the Mobius does.”

“If you’re an incurable studio tinkerer, session expert, or a gigging guitarist who plays in a classic rock cover band one night and a post-rock project the next, the Mobius gives you just about every modulation weapon you could ever need.”

Not Your Dad’s Reverb – blueSky review

Posted by Ethan

Check out the in-depth review of blueSky reverb at Dinosaur Rock Guitar. The “Home for Heavy Guitar” reports that blueSky works great with high gain tones. Here are a few excerpts:

blueSky reverb“Naturally, it does a great job with cleans, but the blueSky is not just another take on vintage reverb pedals. It is a different animal, designed with higher fidelity to suit the needs of the modern players. Perhaps even more importantly here at the Home of Heavy Guitar, the blueSky may be the first reverb pedal designed to address the crunch tones of modern high gain amps – even when you run it from in front of the amp through the guitar input!”

“Along with its overall high quality, the blueSky’s two KEY selling points are that it responds well with higher gain amps, AND it provides usable, pedal-based reverb options from the guitar input jack for non-loop-equipped amps. As such, hard rock and metal players should give the Strymon blueSky a good hard look. It is perfect for these applications.”

“The blueSky is a fine example of creating something new from something old and succeeding. It does everything the manufacturer claims and adds some cool new things to the tonal palette. As with the other Strymon products I’ve seen, the build quality and components are all top notch. Overall, the Strymon blueSky reverb pedal gets five out of five stars. Nice job, Strymon.”

Gilmourish.com reviews Lex Rotary

Posted by Ethan

Lex RotaryRotating speaker cabs have been a part of David Gilmour’s sound since 1971-72. Gilmourish.com, a site devoted to Gilmour’s music, albums, tours, and gear, recently put our Lex Rotary pedal through its paces. Check out the review!

“The Lex Rotary was designed with a painstaking focus on details and the complexity of a rotary cab and look no further people – this is as close as you’ll get to fit a Leslie in a box!”

“Standing in front of the stereo setup you can hear how incredibly dynamic and sophisticated the Lex is.”

“Judging by the Strymon website they set out to create the most authentic sounding rotary simulator and in my humble opinion I think they’ve done it. Highly recommended!”

Tape Op review of El Capistan and blueSky

Posted by Ethan

Tape Op logoRecently Alex Maiolo of Tape Op Magazine had a chance to spend some time with our El Capistan dTape Echo and blueSky reverberator. Here is what he had to say:

El Capistan and blueSky

On Strymon:

“Strymon, while certainly being boutique, have unabashedly embraced the digital age – using modern technology to fix age-old problems and eliminate impossibilities. ”

“Fans of good design will notice that Strymon pedals are unique looking. They are beautiful and original, while still retaining the familiar qualities of good ol’ classic stompboxes. The layout is well thought out, and the construction is solid. The footprint is relatively small considering the controls but doesn’t seem crowded. All of the I/O is in the back panel, which is very handy if you have more than a few things on your board. I don’t think they could have done a much better job, aesthetically or functionally.”

On El Capistan:

“I went to both ends of the spectrum with these controls, which allowed me to hear what a machine new off the shelf probably would have sounded like, as well as one that was brought back into use after propping up a table for 30 years, with no servicing before powering up. After tailoring it to my needs, I used the unit for at least eight live shows with three different bands, and found it to be a joy to use, even under the pressure of a performance.”

“All in all, a fantastic, great sounding little box that delivers on its promise with no exceptions.”

On blueSky:

“The real reason to buy the blueSky is because it goes way beyond what other reverb pedals can do, almost into rack territory. When the left toggle is switched to Mod, a light chorus effect is added that is both subtle enough to not sound like you’re rehashing dated, ’80s sounds, but strong enough to add some interesting depth. It’s hard to describe what happens when the same switch is in Shimmer mode. As the reverb decays, harmonics develop and ‘bloom’ – the longer the decay setting, the more intense the harmonic development and overall effect. It’s very unique, usable, and can take things in an almost synthy direction.”

Best of 2011: Strymon TimeLine!

Posted by Ethan

Nice! Premier Guitar has included our TimeLine delay as one of their Best of 2011 products! Here’s what they had to say:

“At this point, we could probably call Strymon relentless. This mad scientists’ club of tone-tweaking kooks keeps obliterating expectations about how analog digital signal processing can sound. But they’re also happy to exploit digital’s potential to explore more exotic sounds and analog emulations in the same unit. And that breadth of vision births wonders like the TimeLine, a studio-grade Delay that leaves few permutations of the effect unexplored in a package that’s surprisingly easy to navigate.

Strymon’s amazing tape delay emulation technology is just one of the delay options on a menu that runs from analog delay staples to super-out-there intergalactic textures. It’s full of cool preset capabilities, filters, and modulation for coloring your repeats. It also has an all-around, can-do aura that we found ‘infinitely tweakable to suit a musical situation.’ This is one tough-to-top delay.”

TimeLine receives the Premier Gear award!

Posted by Ethan

TimeLine - Premier Gear AwardWe’re very excited to announce that TimeLine has received Premier Guitar’s coveted Premier Gear award!

We’re also extremely proud that it has received 5 out of 5 stars in their recent gear review. Here’s what they say:

“At this point, most guitarists familiar with Strymon are accustomed to having the company knock their socks off. In the last couple of years, this Southern California-based group of hardcore pedal geeks has garnered raves in these pages for their Blue Sky Reverberator and El Capistan tape-delay emulator. The company’s latest weapon for sonic tweaking, the TimeLine delay, is every bit as impressive. And if you’re a studio hound—home, pro, or otherwise—the TimeLine is worth your undivided attention.”

Harmony Central reviews Lex Rotary

Posted by Ethan

Lex Rotary effects pedalPhil O’Keefe over at Harmony Central recently had a chance to put our Lex Rotary rotating speaker pedal through it’s paces. Check out his review here!

“I’ve heard a lot of simulators over the years that have tried to nail the sound of a rotating speaker, and the Lex is right up there at the top of that list.”

“If you’re the type of player who likes to ‘work the switch’ a lot rather than leave it at one speed all the time, you’re going to really like the Lex. It does those all-important transitions between speeds beautifully.”

“The preamp drive is pretty remarkable in terms of the accuracy of its tone and vibe.”
