BigSky reviews!

Posted by Ethan

BigSky ReverberatorThe reviews for BigSky are now appearing through the clouds of the interwebs, and we’re incredibly excited to hear what people have to say.

Featuring 12 unique reverb machines – from rooms, halls, and plate reverbs to “cloud”, “bloom” and “magneto” and more – “Big Sky is something of a triumph, producing hyper-realistic rooms, ambient space trips and everything in between with ease and finesse,” writes Sound on Sound magazine.

Our friends at Premier Guitar think that BigSky is a “virtual mad-scientist lab for those who are endlessly fascinated with the possibilities of audio signals bouncing off unseen objects—and then being twisted, warped, chopped, and vaporized.” It’s so great to hear that what they call “otherworldly and authentic vintage tones” within BigSky provoked such a colorful and evocative reaction.

Gabriel from Best Guitar Effects attended our recent Strymon Social event, and used that opportunity to spend some time talking with our co-founders Gregg, Dave, and Pete. To learn about his “intel-gathering reconnaissance mission” at the Strymon labs, click on over to his incredibly in-depth BigSky review. We’re pleased to learn that he ranks BigSky as “simply one of the best reverb processors available today.” And we’re glad to hear his praise for the wealth of “studio-grade power” in it’s performance-friendly form-factor.

Guitarist magazine also has some very nice things to say about BigSky. They noted that the reverberations within BigSky “make your jaw drop and your playing soar” and that it makes them “want to write poetry to the soundtrack of its glorious ambience.” We’re so glad to hear that BigSky got their creative juices flowing!

We’re incredibly honored that BigSky has received the SonicState Best Effect Pedal of 2013 award, with their team noting “everything about it is stunning.” When it comes to creative inspiration, they cited the real-time tweakability of BigSky as being “on a different level to any reverb we’ve tried before.” And they totally made us blush when they said our “products sound great, they look great, they’re perfectly engineered, and they essentially fit a whole studio rack’s worth of effects and patches into a tiny little box for using on the road.” Thanks guys, we’re so glad you’re enjoying what we’re up to here in the labs! :)

Looping Tips and Techniques

Looping Tips and Techniques - illustration by Ethan Tufts

I recently had the opportunity to contribute an article for the December 2013 issue of Premier Guitar magazine. The topic? Something very dear to my heart—looping tips and techniques!

“If you want to take your looping from four-bar bedroom jams to a performance environment, start thinking of your looper as an instrument, not an effect. Creating engaging loop performances can require the same type of effort that you put into learning guitar. Really get to know your looper until using it becomes second nature.”

And if you’re interested in seeing some of these techniques in practice, please feel free to check out a couple of my recent looping vids on YouTube. :)

Intro to MIDI for Pedalboards

TimeLine MIDIStrymon Firmware Engineer (and resident Jeep repair expert) Dave Fruehling recently contributed an article for the September 2013 issue of Premier Guitar magazine. The topic? MIDI! And how you don’t necessarily need to fear it!

“MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is an oft-maligned, yet cherished technology. Today, more and more guitarists are joining in the fun by using the MIDI features included with many of their pedals. Once you learn a few basic things about MIDI, you don’t have to fear it. Instead you can use MIDI to add some very cool and useful functionality to your rig.”

A chorus of praise for Mobius!

Posted by Ethan

Mobius modulation pedalThe reviews for Mobius have been rolling in, and we’re very excited about what everyone has been saying!

Featuring 12 different types of modulations – chorus, flanger, phaser, a flexible rotary effect and more – “the amount of high-quality effects [Mobius] crams inside is amazing,” writes guitar blog GuitarNoize.com.

» Read the GuitarNoize review

Within each modulation type lays a wealth of mod effects that Premier Guitar magazine describes as “shockingly accurate.”Premier Guitar, The Deli, Guitar Noize, Sound on Sound magazine The “sonic undulations” of the rotary effect, PG continued, are “deep and complex, and at times sound impossibly real.” We’re deeply honored to have received the Premier Guitar “Premier Gear” award, which the magazine bestowed upon Mobius earlier this year.

» Read the Premier Guitar review

In its popular audio blog, The Deli magazine is “extremely excited” about Mobius’ release. It calls the mod pedal “super diverse” thanks to its wide variety of classic mod effects including “everything from lush choruses to pulsating tremolo as well as unlikely additions.”

» Read the Deli review

In a shootout versus some classic mod pedals, Mobius won Sound On Sound magazine’s praises for its “clarity, warmth, smoothness and depth.” With “sounds as glorious as its tech-spec suggests,” Mobius “more than held its own” against its predecessors. SOS ranks Mobius “among the best [mod pedals] of its type.”

Our friends at Premier Guitar think “it’s getting harder to surprise folks with how good Strymon pedals sound,” which makes us really happy. Sound On Sound noted that we’ve “quickly gained a loyal following” in the three years since we began making pedals. And The Deli made us blush when they called us “one of the sickest companies making stompboxes right now.” Thanks, guys, we really appreciate it! :)

What Does a Pedal Sound Like?

Posted by Ethan

What does a pedal sound like? Our very own DSP Engineer and co-founder Pete Celi recently had the opportunity to contribute an article for the March 2013 issue of Premier Guitar magazine.

“Unlike a tree falling in the woods, a pedal won’t make a sound unless an amplifier is there to amplify it. (If no one is there to hear the amplifier, that’s a different philosophical discussion entirely.) This may seem a bit obvious, but when we talk of a pedal’s tone we need to discuss it in the context of a particular rig. This is particularly relevant when discussing overdrive, distortion, and fuzz pedals.”
