This Week’s “Random” Preset: Randomizer for Mobius, BigSky, and TimeLine

Do you ever feel creatively stuck? A new sound design and MIDI tools company called Nordseele has just come up with a fun way to help get you unstuck! Nordseele has created an application that can randomize the parameters of Mobius, TimeLine, and BigSky, instantly creating completely random presets. The short demo video below will give you an idea of how it works:

Something that I found to be really fun is that there is a keyboard shortcut (the numeral 4 key) that randomizes all three effects simultaneously every time you press it. You can also deselect various parameters so that they will not be randomized. The only thing I ended up deselecting was the Boost parameter. Before long, I had three random presets ready to share with you. Here’s what they sound like all together.

Mobius: “Jabber” randomized preset

The Mobius random preset uses the Formant mod machine with a very fast BPM for some crazy jibber-jabber. Here’s what it sounds like by itself.

TimeLine: “Randomiced” randomized preset

The TimeLine random preset uses the Ice delay machine in a delightfully strange way. Here’s what it sounds like by itself:

This is my favorite of the three random presets today. The image below shows the knob settings and secondary parameters. Try it out on your TimeLine!

BigSky: “Random Cloud” randomized preset

The filter setting and long pre-delay allow for a soft and spacious pad that still has plenty of articulation. Here is what the BigSky random preset sounds like by itself:

Strymon BigSky Preset: Random Cloud

To get simultaneous control of all three pedals to work, I connected the MIDI in the same order as the the audio signal flow: MIDI out from my USB MIDI interface into Mobius MIDI In, Out from Mobius into TimeLine, out of TimeLine into BigSky, and out of BigSky back into my MIDI interface (although FPM ST does not seem to accept feedback from the pedals as of version 1.2).  I set each pedal to a different MIDI channel, turned on MIDI CC messages for each pedal, and turned on MIDI Thru for the first two pedals in the chain.

The standalone app that can control all three effects (including the looper in TimeLine) is now available for both Mac and Windows. There are also three Max for Live devices (one for each pedal) that may be purchased separately. Everything is available here: https://gumroad.com/nordseele

  1. It seems that Nordseele has disappeared from Gumroad, but there’s other MAX 4 Live device doing approximatively the same things.
